Kalvari Class Submarine News: Amidst the trials of INS Vikrant in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, sea trials of the fifth submarine of the Kalvari class of the Indian Navy have started.

Sea trials of this submarine of Project 75 are starting from February 1. This submarine was launched in November 2020. It was landed in the Kanhoji Angde Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Maharashtra. After induction into the Indian Navy, this submarine will be named ‘Wazir’.

Now it will have to go through rigorous tests like propulsion system, weapons and sensors. It is being told that this submarine will be inducted into the Indian Navy in the year 2022 itself. Earlier, the sea version of the French-made fighter aircraft Rafale was successfully flight tested in Goa. For this, the same conditions were prepared as are on the indigenously developed aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

A top diplomat said that the Rafale-M competes with the US-made Super Hornet. Both of these are being evaluated by the Indian Navy for possible procurement for deployment on the 44,000-tonne INS Vikrant. INS Vikrant is undergoing trials in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal and may come into service from August.

French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenain said, “The tests were done to see the capability of Rafale Marine to take off from your (India’s) aircraft carrier and it went well.” India’s new aircraft carrier is designed like a ‘ski-jump’ launch ship. This allows an aircraft to take off with the help of its speed, and it is different from other aircraft carriers, which use a device or technique called catapult launch for the aircraft to take off.

Emmanuel Lenain said that the Rafael-M aircraft was test-fired from INS Hansa center in Goa for 12 days last month and for this an artificial ski-jump facility of 283 meters was used. Boeing’s Super Hornet or F/A-18 aircraft are also being offered to sell to India. Next month they can also have a similar test on INS Hansa. Defense sources said the suppliers have made changes to both the Rafael-M and the Super Hornet fighter jets so that they can be made for India’s orders.
