A popular TV presenter has announced a shock decision to walk away after an unexplained disappearance from the camera this month.
Sports presenter Cameron Williams has confirmed he has left Channel 9 as a result of health issues.
The popular 59-year-old had been missing from Nine’s 6pm news bulletins in recent weeks without explanation.
However, he has now revealed he has left the network to focus on his health.
He responded to a well-wisher on Twitter by posting: “I need to sort a few health issues and then back into it. Thanks for your thoughts and hope all well for you”.
It comes after The Daily Telegraph first reported Williams announced his decision to quit in an email sent to Channel 9 colleagues on Wednesday.
The report also revealed Williams had contracted Covid-19 earlier this month, but was able to return this week.
“It’s with a heavy heart I have decided to resign from Nine,” he wrote.
“Leaving the best team in News is difficult and being part of that team an honour.
“But I have struggled for years with increasingly poor health and I want to address that now for the sake of a more important team, my family.”
After reports first emerged of Williams’ unexplained disappearance in recent weeks, Nine’s director of news and current affairs Darren Wick told staff in an earlier email:
“Cameron Williams has resigned from his role with NINE as on-air sports presenter.
“Cam is leaving us to focus on his health and then to pursue other opportunities that we look forward to hearing more about.
“I want to thank Cam for his significant contribution to Nine over the past six years. Cam’s last day was 21 March 2022. Please join us in wishing him all the very best.”
NRL presenter and host James Bracey has replaced Williams in recent weeks.
Nine is yet to announce who will be replacing Williams on a permanent basis.
Williams first moved to Nine as a sports presenter in 2010.
He has also worked as a weekend breakfast morning TV host.
In an extraordinary career, Williams has previously worked for The Courier-Mail, The Australian, Fox Sports and Channel 7.
